Fulcrum Construction – Atlanta
Fulcrum Construction – Atlanta is our original office. It’s the retail commercial construction hub for the Eastern, Southern, and Midwestern United States. We’ll build high-quality projects for you anywhere from Delaware to Florida. We go the extra mile to please our clients – although we’d rather talk to you about it from the golf course than in traffic like our Los Angeles office!
What do you find most challenging about retail, and commercial construction?
Cal Patterson: Meshing the personalities, strengths, and opportunities of everyone involved in a project is the most rewarding challenge. It’s hard to get it right, but when we do, it’s amazing. We’re never afraid to own up to any issues and make changes in pursuit of excellence.
What’s your personal philosophy on retail, and commercial construction?
Cal Patterson: I approach everything with the mindset of rightsizing the complexity. We shouldn’t make anything more difficult than necessary. The goal is to give everyone the structure and tools to be successful, and help them along the way.
Tell me one of your best moments working at Fulcrum Construction:
Cal Patterson: My initial interview sticks out vividly. I was a recent graduate in a weak job market and had been to some interviews that didn’t pan out. I finally loosened up and was being myself, and although I didn’t think it went perfectly, it worked. To see how far we have come is inspiring for the future.
What’s it like working with your partner every day?
Cal Patterson: A great Yin and Yang. I cannot say enough great things about Mike’s hard work, dedication, skill, experience, and the care he has for our team. Perhaps most importantly, we have fun—which allows us to be successful.
What movie, no matter how many times you have seen it, do you have to watch when it is on and why?
Cal Patterson: Caddyshack—a classic golf-themed comedy. Those that have known me for a long time have heard every quote from the movie.
Mike Maira: The hours required are a challenge, when you factor in the deadlines and the amount of changes that get made without any time extensions. We just put our nose to the grindstone and get it done.
What’s your personal philosophy on retail commercial construction?
Mike Maira: Do everything possible to accommodate the customer. Bring in every project on time, and under budget if possible. Treat everyone involved the way you would like to be treated.
Tell me one of your best moments working at Fulcrum Construction:
Mike Maira: A great Fulcrum moment was the completion of the 2-story Dick’s Sporting Goods in Tampa, FL. The project had many challenges due to the existing building structure, mall connection, and other uncovered existing conditions. We completed it in less than the original specified time frame.
What’s it like working with your partner everyday?
Mike Maira: It’s very enjoyable working with Mike Arasin. He’s created a company culture that has a real team atmosphere. He has a real caring nature to his personality. Somehow Mike can remember literally everything. That being said, I think I’m the one with better organizational skills.
What movie, no matter how many times you have seen it, do you have to watch when it is on and why?
Mike Maira: The Shawshank Redemption. It’s such a great movie with a strong message about never giving up that really resonates in my life and work. Not to mention the terrific acting and directing.

Aaron: Being successful in this business is a result of a strong work ethic and dedication. Make sure that you are successful and everything else will fall into place.
What’s it like working with your partner everyday?
Aaron: Willy and I try to have a good time since we often spend more time together than I do with my family. We have opposite personalities and we work great together because of it. He’s a creative thinker, and has the unique ability to keep a complicated situation light for everyone involved. I may not be as funny as Willy, but I’ve got a lot more hair on my head.
What do you need to be successful in this job?
Aaron: Retail commercial construction is always changing – the clients, the market. You need patience, dedication, and organization to do it right.
What are some of your favorite activities/hobbies/pastimes outside of work?
Aaron: My first priority is spending time with my family. I love to be in the outdoors – going hiking, hunting and fishing.
What is your favorite kind of cookie and why?
Aaron: Frosted holiday sugar cookies. Because they are the best. It’s a crime we only have them at the holidays.
Willy: There’s always plenty of reasons why a project can’t finish on time. Our job is to get it done on time despite those reasons. I believe in treating people kindly, and giving them a second chance if needed.
What’s it like working with your partner everyday?
Willy: My “work husband” Aaron and I have a lot of fun and work really hard. We respect each other and seek each other’s counsel on things all day. He’s patient, calm, cool, and collected. We compliment each other well. But I’m much funnier than he is.
What do you need to be successful in this job?
Willy: To be successful in retail construction, you need tenacity, humility, and coffee. Lots of coffee.
What are some of your favorite activities/hobbies/pastimes outside of work?
Willy: I enjoy live music, traveling and acting. You can see me on the big screen, acting in the film The Wrestler opposite Mickey Rourke.
What is your favorite kind of cookie and why?
Willy: My Mom’s chocolate chip cookies are my favorite. They remind me of my youth.

What's your personal philosophy on retail commercial construction?
Brad: My philosophy on all construction is that our built environments matter. Always identify key project success factors and work as a team to provide and execute solutions to meet those goals.
What do you need to be successful in this job?
Brad: Tenacity and humility. Construction is a grind and nothing short of our continuous best efforts and skill will lead to sustained success. At the same time, humans get things wrong. Learning from our mistakes and harnessing those valuable moments only stands to improve future efforts and outcomes.
Tell me one of your significant accomplishments at Fulcrum Construction:
Brad: I’m proud of my track record in retaining both internal staff as well as long-term clients. It is rewarding when people and organizations continue to seek your services or employment.
What are some of your favorite activities/hobbies/pastimes outside of work?
Brad: I’m an Oregon State Beaver sports fanatic, fried food aficionado (especially Glazed Crullers from Heavenly Donuts), and an avid family camper. My motto is “Work hard, family harder.”
What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you at work?
Brad: Well, let's just say I had a "wardrobe malfunction" while fiercely battling in a company ping-pong tournament—my pants couldn't handle the intensity and split!

Fulcrum Construction - Texas
Fulcrum Construction - Texas They say everything’s bigger in Texas - and the demand for high-quality retail commercial construction certainly is. Fulcrum Construction heard the call, and opened our Texas branch in San Antonio to serve clients in the Lone Star State. We may be the newest office, but you can bet it ain’t our first rodeo.
What's your personal philosophy on retail commercial construction?
Samuel: My philosophy is always the same. At Fulcrum, we build a quality space per the client’s requirements and in a timely manner so that the client can do what they do best - provide jobs, and sell goods and services.
What do you find most challenging about retail commercial construction?
Samuel: Communication is vital in construction. Where it gets challenging is that we are responsible for communicating expectations and milestones to multiple groups of people, each with unique perspectives and goals. It’s our job to focus each group on the primary goal - a successful project for the client.
What are some of your favorite activities/hobbies/pastimes outside of work?
Samuel: I play tennis, basketball, and golf. I love sports of all kinds - especially if my team or the USA is involved. My favorite activity is anything with our son, which depends on whatever sport he’s currently involved in.
Tyler: The biggest challenge I come across regularly is finding a way to keep your word when others you depend on don’t keep theirs.
What's your personal philosophy on retail commercial construction?
Tyler: You’re only as good as your last job. You need to stay self-driven, innovative, and constantly want to improve. Keep your word, and do the right thing — even if it costs you. We don’t have the time to compromise the values that got us here in the first place.
What do you wish other people knew about your partner?
Tyler: I’ve known Samuel since we were 18 years old. He's one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met. He has a remarkable work ethic, and would never ask anybody to do something he wouldn’t do himself. Now, Samuel is prettier than I am — but looks only get you so far on the golf course.
What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you at work or on a jobsite?
Tyler: A couple of years ago, we were finishing a convenience store for one of our customers. The entrances were barricaded, there were signs everywhere that said “Opening Soon”, and the fuel cost signage was set to $9.99/gallon. Well, none of that stopped one person from getting out of their vehicle, moving the barricades, and trying to pump some seriously expensive gas!
